Ordering a Dedicated Server

Ordering a dedicated server is a build request rather than an instant provision, so this guide walks through choosing a tier, what happens after you pay, how to read the provisioning tracker, and how long each stage takes. It also covers storage and GPU orders, which follow the same path.

Before You Order

Three decisions are worth making before you reach checkout.

Tier. Pick from Bedrock, Slate, Granite, Basalt, and Titan. The five shapes and what each is good for are in Dedicated Servers Overview.

Managed or unmanaged. Unmanaged gives you root and leaves the operating system entirely to you. Managed keeps the same hardware and adds our engineers on the software layer. Both are listed as separate plans, so you choose at the point of sale rather than afterwards.

Whether you actually need bare metal. If your reason is raw performance rather than single tenancy, compare against the Dedicated vCPU cloud range first. Those tiers give guaranteed cores, are available in six regions, provision in minutes, carry no setup fee, and can be resized. Choosing a Cloud Server Architecture lays out the differences.

Finding the Plans

  1. Sign in to KPanel.
  2. Click Store in the left sidebar.
  3. Under Servers, click the Dedicated Servers card.

That opens the compute plans page filtered to the Dedicated Servers family. Tabs across the top switch between the compute families, and a segmented control switches between Unmanaged and Managed. Each card shows the tier name, its specification chips, an availability badge, the monthly price in your account currency, and the setup fee.

The availability badge is worth reading. In stock means the tier can be built now. Limited or Out of stock means capacity is constrained in some or all locations, and the card explains what that means for you rather than letting you order into a wall.

Prices are shown excluding GST. If your account currency is NZD, 15 percent GST is added at checkout and appears in the pay-button total. The setup fee is charged once; the monthly price recurs.

Placing the Order

Click through from the tier card, confirm the plan in your cart, and complete checkout. You are charged the first month plus the one-time setup fee. Cloud servers have no setup fee; dedicated, storage, and GPU servers all do, because a physical machine is being built.

As soon as payment succeeds:

  • An order acknowledgement email lands in your inbox.
  • A dedicated server order is created in your account.
  • The server appears in Dedicated Servers in the sidebar with a status of Order received.

The Provisioning Tracker

Open the new server from the Dedicated Servers list. Until it is ready you see a Provisioning workflow tracker with five stages:

StageWhat is happening
Order receivedYour order is recorded and queued for allocation
Hardware allocationA physical machine of the right specification is being located
Hardware allocatedThe machine is assigned to your account
OS install and networkThe operating system is installed and networking is configured
Ready to useThe server is handed over and access details are sent

Below the tracker is an Activity log with a timestamped entry for every step, plus a Latest line carrying the most recent message from our team. The page refreshes itself every 30 seconds while an order is in progress, so you can leave it open.

Do not treat the tracker as a countdown. A dedicated server is built to order, and the time from payment to handover depends on which tier you chose and what hardware is free. We do not publish a fixed lead time because we will not promise one we cannot hold to. If you need an estimate for a specific tier before you commit, ask our team first.

When the Server Is Ready

At Ready to use the page changes completely. You get:

  • A vitals strip: power state, primary IPv4, paid-until date, and server number.
  • A Server panel with the tier name, data centre, power state, server number, and provisioning date.
  • A Network panel with the primary IPv4, the IPv6 subnet, a copyable ssh root@<ip> command, and a count of any additional IPs.
  • A Billing panel with the paid-until date and the contract end date.
  • A Tools grid linking to power, rescue, firewall, traffic, IPs, reverse DNS, console, and billing.

Access credentials are sent by email when the server reaches ready. Sign in over SSH first and change what you need to change: Connecting to a Cloud Server Over SSH covers the mechanics, and they are identical on bare metal.

Naming Your Server

The server is created with its tier name, so an account with one Bedrock sees a server called Bedrock. Click the pencil icon next to the name on the overview page to give it your own label, up to 60 characters using letters, numbers, spaces and - _ . ( ).

The nickname is what shows in the list, in the page heading, and in the URL. If you run two servers of the same tier, the server number is appended so each address stays unique and stable.

Storage and GPU Orders

Storage servers and GPU servers are ordered from the same compute plans page, using the Storage and GPU / AI tabs. Both carry a setup fee and both are built to order.

Storage server orders run through exactly the same tracker as dedicated servers and appear in the same Dedicated Servers list once created. See Storage Servers Overview.

GPU capacity is allocated by our team before a machine is built, so a GPU order is acknowledged by email and confirmed by us rather than moving straight into the tracker. See GPU Servers Overview before you order one.

Reserving a Tier That Is Out of Stock

Some tiers are stock-constrained. When capacity is not available the plan card shows a Reserve action rather than a configure button, and joining the reserve queue records your interest against that tier and region.

A reservation is a place in a queue, not a scheduled build. We do not provision reserved capacity automatically and we do not commit to a wait time. There is also no self-service cancel button for a reservation: if you no longer want it, contact support and we will remove it.

If Something Goes Wrong

If an order reaches Failed, the page says so and our team is alerted automatically. You do not need to do anything, but you are welcome to open a ticket and quote the order date.

For anything else, including changing the billing on a dedicated server or cancelling it, contact us from Support in KPanel or email support@kapsulehost.com. Cancellation of bare metal is handled by our team so we can confirm the contract end date with you first.

Once the machine is live, Managing a Dedicated Server covers everything you can do to it from KPanel.
