How a transfer runs

Four steps, and two of them take a minute at your old provider.

You do two small things at the provider that holds the name today, and we do the rest. Your site and your mail keep answering the whole way through.

  1. Unlock the name where it lives now

    Every registrar has a transfer lock switch on the domain, set on by default as a protection. Turn it off, and while you are there turn any privacy service off so the registry can read the record. Ours goes on free the day the name lands here, and stays on for as long as you own it.

  2. Ask them for the authorisation code

    The code proves the name is yours to move, and your current provider has to give it to you. Most send it to the registered email within minutes.

  3. Paste the code here and pay one year's renewal

    We read your zone first and copy every record we find, and only then ask the registry for the name, so your website and your mail keep answering from the first minute of the move to the last.

  4. The registry gives your old provider five days to approve

    They can approve it the moment they see it and many do. Either way the name lands with a year added to it, and we email you when it is done.

What does a transfer cost?
One year's renewal on that extension, and that year is added to the registration. It is the same figure the name renews at here every year afterwards.
Will my website and my email keep working?
Yes. We read your zone and copy every record we find before the registry is asked for the name, so your visitors and your mail keep getting the same answers throughout the move.
How long does it take?
The registry gives the provider you are leaving five days to approve the move, and they can approve it the moment they see it. We email you the moment the name lands.
What do I need from my current provider?
Two things: the transfer lock turned off, and the authorisation code for the name. Both are in their control panel and they have to give you the code when you ask.
Can I move a name I registered last month?
A registry holds a new name at its first registrar for sixty days, so start the move on the day that clears. The check at the top of this page reads the record and tells you the exact date.
