Wellington, 2015. We were building websites, not hosting them.
We built websites for small businesses in our own city. When one of them went down at nine at night, ours was the number that rang. We would apologise, promise to find out what had happened, and then sit on hold with a host who would not tell us.
The pattern never changed. Nobody told the customer first. Moving a site cost them a day and us a weekend. And the figure on the invoice in year two was never the figure on the page at signup.
We got tired of apologising for other people. So we built the host we had wanted to hand our clients to. The things that used to embarrass us are written into the contract now rather than onto a page, and they have not moved since.
