- What is a WHOIS record?
- It is the entry a registry publishes about a domain name: who holds it, which registrar manages it, when it was registered, when it lapses, where it points and what state it is in. Every registered name has one and anybody can read it.
- Why does a registrant say protected?
- Because the owner has WHOIS privacy on, which replaces their personal contact details in the public record. We include it free with every name we sell, on every extension that allows it.
- What does clientTransferProhibited mean?
- It is a transfer lock set where the name is managed now, and it is the usual protection against a name being taken. The owner turns it off at their registrar and the name becomes movable.
- Can I see who owns a name that is protected?
- The registrar is published on every record, and they will pass a message to the holder. The registrar, the dates, the nameservers and the DNSSEC state are always public, which is what a working name needs.
