Insights: Problems Found Before You Notice Them

The automatic checks KapsuleHost runs across your sites, domains and account, and what to do with what they find.

Insights are plain-English observations about your account, detected automatically. Rather than making you remember to check a certificate expiry date or notice that a backup stopped running, the platform watches for the things that reliably go wrong and tells you while there is still time to act.

Where to Find Them

There are two ways in.

The bell icon in the top bar of KPanel carries a count of anything you have not seen yet. Click it for the full list at /insights.

The Signals card on your dashboard groups the same information into a single calm summary, with a link through to the full list.

The full list has a filter across the top: All, Critical, Warning, Tip and Info. Start at Critical and work down.

What Gets Checked

The checks run on a schedule in the background, roughly every fifteen minutes, across every active site on your account. Broadly they fall into five groups.

Certificates and DNS

  • An SSL certificate approaching expiry, escalating as the date gets closer.
  • A missing or invalid SPF record on a domain that sends mail.

Email deliverability

  • A domain whose authentication setup scores poorly, which is the leading cause of your mail landing in spam folders. See SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

Availability and security

  • Recent downtime on a site, drawn from the same uptime checks the Uptime tab shows.
  • An unusual spike in blocked malicious traffic against a site.
  • A failed deployment or an application that has crashed.
  • A positive note when a site has been perfectly stable over the last month, which is worth knowing too.

Resources

  • Disk usage climbing towards the point where writes start failing.
  • Backups that have failed or gone stale.

Money and lifecycle

  • A domain approaching expiry with auto-renew switched off, which is the single most common way people lose a domain.
  • A payment card that is expiring or has already expired, which is the single most common cause of a failed renewal.

How to Read One

Each insight carries a severity, a short explanation of what was found, and where possible a link straight to the screen where you fix it.

  • Critical means something is failing now or will fail imminently, and it will cost you something real. Act today.
  • Warning means something will become a problem if left alone. Put it on this week's list.
  • Tip and Info are advisory. Read them when you have a moment.

Two actions are available on an insight. Marking it done records that you have dealt with it. Dismissing it removes it from your list. Neither changes anything about your site, they only change what you see.

Do not dismiss a critical insight to make the badge go away. The underlying condition is still there, and the next check will not necessarily re-raise it in a form you notice. Fix the thing, and the insight clears on its own.

They Clear Themselves

Insights are not a ticket queue you have to groom. Each one carries its own lifespan, from a couple of days for a transient event up to a month for something like an approaching expiry, and it disappears when that passes or when the condition it describes goes away.

If an insight comes back after you thought you had fixed it, the fix did not take. That is useful information rather than a bug.

What You Will Not See Here

Insights are deliberately quiet. The governing rule is that if a problem is ours rather than yours, or if there is nothing you could do about it, it is not an insight.

In practice that means:

  • Platform-wide incidents are not raised as insights. If several sites go down at once, that is our problem and it belongs on the status page, not in your list. See Status and Uptime.
  • Unverifiable readings are suppressed. If a check could not get a trustworthy reading, it stays quiet rather than guessing.
  • Test and internal sites are excluded.

The result is a short list. If your Insights page is empty, that is the intended state, not a failure to load.

Getting Insights by Email

You do not have to keep checking the panel. Two controls, on the Insights page and on the dashboard Signals card, decide what reaches your inbox:

  • Critical alerts are the ones you would want to be woken for. These are on by default and you can opt out.
  • Other insight emails are off by default and you opt in.

Emails are deliberately rate-limited so you never get a stream of them, and any given insight is only ever emailed once. If you want notifications tuned more broadly across your account, see Notifications.

Insights Are Not the Whole Picture

Insights tell you when something specific is wrong. They are not a metrics dashboard. For actual numbers, go to the source:
